I am a public servant who spent nearly 15 years as a park ranger, and a former Marine combat veteran with a passion for storytelling. After serving two combat tours in Iraq, including the harrowing November 2004 Battle of Fallujah, the turbulent waters of my past settled, and I transitioned into a fulfilling life as a park ranger.
Over the years, I have guided countless visitors through the vast and rugged landscapes of the American west as an interpretive ranger, sharing not only the beauty of the natural world but the lessons of survival and resilience that I’ve learned through nature and experience.
From battlefield to backcountry, my writing captures the connection between man, nature, and the past. My work blends vivid descriptions, deep introspection, and hard-earned wisdom of someone who’s faced the best and worst life has to offer.
My writing can be found throughout the National Park Service and Bureau of Land Management system through interpretive wayside stops, brochures, and Junior Ranger Books. I’m best known for public speaking to large groups of park visitors, politicians, and Native American tribal members.
There have been many times where I'm asked, "What do you actually do as a ranger?" I'd like to share some of the funny, curious and just down down right good adventures of being a public servant at our National Parks and Monuments.
Up there I mentioned I love to travel. Working in the tourism industry my wife, Kathleen and I spend most of our free time exploring off-the-beaten track places, and we do it with our best friends, our herd of pack goats.
Most of our overseas adventures are also spent touring the backroads and byways, really getting to know a country in the time we have there. My country count is up to 36 right now, and I have tickets in hand for number 37.
More than anything, I love the art of story. I hope that this can be a place to share some of those stories with you.
So, sit back, brew a cup of coffee, or grab a cold beer and relax. It's story time.
*If you've hung with me this far, I want to put it out there that I was a Marine infantryman, and swearing is like a second language to me. Also, some of the themes of these tales involve real combat related scenes. I'll put a disclaimer at the top of those stories so you know what you're about to get yourself into. Thanks!
